Austin briefly ran his hands over the fabric of his vest. All around him guests were smiling and talking amongst themselves. A little ways away he could see Hilda in her wedding gown, the biggest smile Austin had ever seen on her face as she danced with her new husband. Everywhere he looked he could see happy couples dancing.

He looked over at Justin who rested his chin in the palm of his hand as he watched his mother’s smile. Austin could feel a warmth spread through him as he watched his boyfriend’s expression; as he saw the love and caring shine through. That’s what they were though. They were boyfriends, finally and truly. Everyone knew it now, and that thought both excited and worried Austin. He had never had an actual boyfriend before this moment, and he knew neither did Justin. They would always be each other’s first real boyfriends. Nothing would take that away from them.

The thing was Austin didn’t want to be Justin’s first boyfriend.

He wanted to be his last.

“What are you thinking about?”

Austin glanced up at Justin. Justin had been watching Austin just as he had been watching him. A smirk wound its way onto his face. “You,” Austin replied.

“Oh, yeah?”

“You were really brave tonight.”

Justin’s eyes widened a bit. He gave off a nervous smile with a downward tilt of his head—never breaking eye contact. “Honestly, I thought it would be so difficult.”

“It wasn’t?”

“No, it was. It’s just… when I saw you it felt like how difficult it would be didn’t matter. Like it never mattered when I was with you.”

“You’re saying I make you feel good.” His added emphasis on the final word caused Justin to smile embarrassedly, which only made Austin’s grin richer.

“You’re such a dork,” Justin replied, laughter in his voice.

“Well, that’s a story right?”

“What do you mean?”

“The Dork and the Diva. It’s our story.”

“Our story?”

“Yeah,” Austin said. He found Justin’s hand underneath the table and wove his fingers with his. “Everyone has their own story to tell, right? They go through their life page by page, plot by plot.” He held up their enclosed hands. “And sometimes stories intertwine, making one great story.”

Justin looked at the bracelet around Austin’s wrist.

“I wonder how our story ends,” Justin said.

“The really great ones don’t,” Austin replied. “They continue on well past the ending, leaving everything up to imagination.”

Justin wrapped his free hand around Austin’s neck, pulling him in closely. They rested their foreheads against one another. Their eyes were closed as they felt everyone else’s gaze upon them. They breathed each other’s words and thoughts and it felt like the rest of the room and the rest of their life beyond that moment simply disappeared.

He had never known this feeling. This is what it was like to be a couple and to let the entire world know it. They were together now, validated by the many people who could see them. Together they were just two kids trying to live a great story together. Now all they had to do was just not mess it up.

Austin pulled in his lips. He shook his head lightly as a tiny elated sigh left him. “This is messed up, alright?” There was playfulness in his words, like he knew that Justin would remember. He felt like Justin would always remember, like he had been playing their first kiss in his mind over and over again, trying to grasp onto every moment. Austin always did.

“You’re so in love with yourself.”

Austin could feel his breath catch in his throat. He found Justin’s free hand and held it, too. How could anyone hold hands like it didn’t matter, like the feat didn’t constantly amaze them? When Austin intertwined his fingers with Justin’s he felt like their stories were physically intertwining. He felt as if they were just two people who somehow found each other in a sea of nothing and now he never wanted to let go. When he considered all of the things that could have happened differently and all of the moments that had to have happened that led to this point, he knew that holding Justin’s hand wasn’t just a commonplace gesture.

It was a fucking miracle.

He pressed his lips against Justin’s softly, delicately.

When their lips parted, Austin could feel his heart radiate. His palms were sweaty and a strong current of nervousness twisted through him. He was sure that Justin could feel his heartbeat—feel that it was six times too fast—but he said it anyway.

“Wouldn’t you be?” he whispered against Justin’s lips and heart.

And within those three words were all of Austin’s vulnerabilities admitted aloud, but, his lips against Justin’s, no matter how difficult it would be to face them, he knew it didn’t matter.

Their stories were already intertwined.
